Steinar Ellingsen

 Steinar Ellingsen, lecturer in Journalism

Steinar Ellingsen is the Director and co-founder of Melbourne WebFest (MWF), Australia’s international web series festival. MWF was the fourth festival of its kind in the world when it was established in 2012, and it remains the biggest celebration of web series in the Southern Hemisphere. Steinar is the Head of Department of Communication and Media at La Trobe University. As part of his practice-based PhD, he created the award-winning documentary series The Inland Sea: An Australian Odyssey (2012). He has been teaching web series to undergraduate students at La Trobe for a number of years, producing the award-winning series Magnify Melbourne as part of the curriculum in the Bachelor of Media and Communication. Steinar is currently working on a collaborative study on web series with a team of researchers in Australia. He has given talks about web series at a number of universities and at festivals around the globe. Recently, he was part of the international jury for the Independent Production Fund in Canada’s latest round of funding for web series.

Every year, dramas are the most awarded web series in the world. This genre has grown immensely in recent years and serves to address deep, contemporary issues and subjects. How is short form dealing with this intensity of emotions? What strategies can directors use to make their series emotionally impactful?

Diana Mirza

Diana Mirza is Project Lead at House of Research – a media and market research company based in Berlin, which studies media audiences with special attention to narrative audiovisual media such as film, television and online video.

Before joining House of Research, Diana worked as a research and teaching associate at the Institute for Theory and Practice of Communication at the Berlin University of the Arts. In her academic work, she investigated the emotional impact of drama in the form of movies and short films on different audiences. She has extensive experience with different methodical approaches for studying emotion in the context of media reception, including coding viewers’ facial expressions and measuring physiological data (heart rate and skin conductance). 


Tolga H. Yüceil

Tolga H. Yüceil (1969, Ankara) lives in İstanbul. Between 1994-2000, he studied photography at CUNY and film at the New School in New York City. 

He worked as an photo-editor for Danny Lyon and as a photo-assistant for Eddie Adams. In Istanbul , He produced and directed numerous TV commercials, video works and short films.  He was the project partner and the DP for the feature-documentary film, ‘’Eski Açık Sarı Desene’’ - The Journey of the Galatasaray soccer team in 2002-2003. He is the founding partner ofthe production company ‘’Nnaco’’. Nnaco is a no-compromise funky joint to produce works ranging from photography to video art and from short films to commercials. The company is trying to work with people and projects that promote a positive vibe.


Caterina Mongiò

Caterina Mongiò, filmmaker and actress, was born and raised in Rome.

She studied film at UCLA. While studying, She had a chance to work as a director for a documentary , "Rio Meu Amor, stories of Rio”. 
She spent her time in the favelas of Rio De Janeiro filming children and their lives in relation to local music.
In Rome, she directed numerous (making of ) backstage videos forItalian Film Productions, among them ‘’The Unknown’’ directed by Oscar Award Winner Giuseppe Tornatore, and other films directed by Marco Tullio Giordana, Luca Guadagnino and Volfango De Biasi.


August Pflugfelder

August Pflugfelder is Creative Producer at PULS, the young public broadcasting service from the Bayerische Rundfunk. He developed an realised in the past years a wide range of innovative cross media formats ranging from documentation series like “UMZUG!” to web series or recently the first soap on Snapchat “iam.serafina”. 

August Pflugfelder studied film & directing at the Munich Film School and won already several prices for his documentaries. 


Marc Schießer

Marc Schießer was born in Wuppertal in 1986 and made his first short films at the age of 13. After studying, Marc worked as a producer and camera operator on fashion films as well as a media pedagogical director at the renowned Medienprojekt Wuppertal. From 2014 to 2016, he worked together with Marcel Becker-Neu on the fiction YouTube channel "Vivi & Denny". Since 2016, he has been the Managing Director of Outside the Club GmbH and writer, director and producer of the mystery series "Wishlist".

Muriel Aboulrouss

A multiple awad-winning cinematographer from Beirut-Lebanon, considered to be the first camerawoman in the Arab world. Her cinematography includes a great deal of award winning documentaries , such as Mercedes by Hady Zaccak , and feature films such as Michel Kammoun’s Falafel 2006 and George Hashem’s Stray Bullet 2010 for which she won best cinematography at Namur film festival.

As a teacher and lecturer she created & led film workshops within the Cine-Jam film lab. In 2014, she debuted as a director with documentary series Zyara , produced by her own production Home of cine-jam.

Let's get real - we all want to reach this hyper connected generation, but only a few have an idea of how to do it. There are, however, strategies for content placement and marketing to reach this precious target.

Nora Hiller

Nora Hiller is Creative Producer at funk, the online content network of ARD and ZDF, where she is currently working on webseries development and distribution. She manages and develops fictional content such as Girl Cave (distributed on YouTube) and Der Wedding kommt (distributed on Facebook). As well as non-fictional formats, working with YouTubers on projects such as Auf Klo, Kostas Kind and janasdiary. 

Before funk, Nora has worked as a freelance journalist in the field of arts and entertainment, specializing on film and music. She was an assistant producer on the Berlin-based monthly live music show TV Noir for ZDF Kultur and a VJ for Flicks And the City, a UK-based online video platform for film interviews. She studied cultural journalism (M.A.) at the University of the Arts in Berlin, Germany.


Murat Ünal

Murat Ünal, Senior Manager New Business Development. At brandboost Murat takes care that brands reach their target audience with or without influencers. 

Therefore we use from branded content campaigns up to branded channels everything as well as creative creation of campaigns all focused on online video.

Before that Murat was a creative filmmaker who started out as a Youtuber, creating original content that went first from YouTube to German network tv ZDFneo resulting in many formats such as the Late-Night-Comedy Show "Süper-Tiger Show" and shooting his own web-series "Tiger - Der Serie" which won the Special Price of the Jury at the Boddinale Film Festival 2015. At the moment, he is finishing his No-Budget feature length Rom-Com "Hollywoodtürke", set for release in 2017.


Kristian Costa-Zahn

Kristian Costa-Zahn developed and produced his first interactive feature film already in 2003. At that time he received his first awards for his multimedia film projects for Adidas and Deutsche Post.
He works for UFA since 2006 and was one of the co-founders of the digital studio UFA LAB in 2009. As Head of Creation and Executive Producer he brought the following projects to life among others: the transmedia crime project "Wer rettet Dina Foxx", the award-winning motion comic “Ewig Mein”, the urban culture YouTube Original Channel "eNtR berlin" and the virtual reality experience “Virtual Testdrive” for smart.  Currently he works on various online video projects and webseries like “Jäger & Sammler” for funk and more virtual reality and transmedia projects.

His projects won various national and international awards, among others "New York Festivals Gold World Medal“ (2x) and 3 Rockies at Banff World Media Festival. For „Dina Foxx - Deadly Contact“ he was awarded with an “International Digital Emmy”.

An Englishman hailing from what’s often referred to as Gods County – Yorkshire. Moved to London after finishing his drama degree. After working on a BBC Children’s TV series, formed own company Quid In Shrapnel, producing the movie‘Call of the Hunter’ and ‘A day in the life of Felix’ and currently Fotoautomat Man.  Anthony has written articles and a book on ‘Time Management’ a subject that has amused, confused and helped him over the years. He now lives in Berlin with his wife Katrin.

This year, web series and digital content expert, Joël Bassaget will be joined by Anne Santa Maria, in highlighting six programs submitted to Webfest Berlin. During this special session they will explain why they think these picks have a great potential for production or distribution.

Joël Bassaget

Joël Bassaget lives in Berlin and has been writing scripts for television since 1990. Passionate about new formats and independent production, he created the blog "Web Series Mag" on the French newspaper Liberation website to review the web fictions of the whole world. Also a consultant, he observes, analyzes, criticizes, studies and catalogs this particular format, offering his expertise to online broadcasters and content producers. He regularly gives lectures on web series. In 2015, he founded the Web Series World Cup and released the first statistic study (“Web Series Anatomy”), in 2016 he published “Le guide des Webséries – la nouvelle vague” and in 2017 was elected first president of the French web creators’ association (WAF).


Anne Santa Maria

After working experiences abroad in media relations and production: HBO (NYC), Addis & Wechlser (L.A.), AFTRS (Sydney), Anne Santa Maria began her career as Commissioning Editor within TF1 French Drama division and as Producer and Editorial Executive of TF1 Productions, she joined Fremantlemedia in 2006 as Head of Drama, France. In 2011 she created her own label: Taronja Prod (Newen Group) and founded the young talents incubator: Telfrance Network. She produced prime time fiction and digital series such as “Osmosis”, a multi award winning web series with 13 prizes and 42 nominations worldwide, which she pushed to its longer form adaptation for Netflix as the second French Local original production. She is now monitoring and piloting creators and production companies’ international online content development, production, and sales strategies for TV Broadcasters and OTT platforms. Anne was the Conference Speaker of the digital short form series pitch (Kids and Drama) for MIPTV 2017.

THE FUNK APPROACH TO ONLINE VIDEO CREATION

Over the past year, ARD and ZDF have launched their online content network „funk“, for 14-29 year-olds. With now more than 70 formats and almost 300 million views, funk has become a major player in creating fictional and non-fictional content on social networks and third-party platforms, including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat.

In this talk, funk Creative Producer Thilo Kasper will share some hands-on learnings and methods for both creation and distribution of multi-platform online video content, using compelling examples from the funk network. There will also be time for your questions.

Thilo Kasper

Thilo Kasper is Creative Producer at funk, the online content network of ARD and ZDF. He develops and manages fictional and non-fictional web video formats, such as the Snapchat soap opera „iam.serafina“ or the political show „Deutschland3000“ on Facebook. 

Before funk, Thilo worked as a freelance producer for BuzzFeed Motion Pictures, was program manager of the journalism innovation hub „Vocer Innovation Medialab“ and experimented with Internet Memes as journalistic tools for major media outlets, such as ZEIT Online. 

Thilo studied Communication Design with a focus on Design Research and Design Thinking in Karlsruhe, Berlin, Amsterdam, Potsdam and Reading, Pennsylvania. In 2015 he was awarded „Top 30 under 30“ journalist by German Medium Magazin. He lives and works in Berlin and Mainz.

Digital storytelling is a format for and by the new generation - But as a producer, how do you find and work with young creators who are often tremendously talented, but also totally inexperienced in the production process?

Benoit Beaudoin

Director, Innovation and Digital Lab

Benoit works in the field of interactive technologies and digital content since he graduated from Communication Studies at Concordia University.  As a designer, content creator, producer and consultant, he has contributed to hundreds of projects and titles over the years. He also worked as a content developer and educational technologist in large corporations such as Air Canada, the Canadian Space Agency, Bell and Hydro Quebec.

In 2001, Benoit became digital producer in the television industry.  His productions won several prizes such as best digital content, given by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television in 2006, 2008 and 2013.  

Since 2008, Benoit has been developing and managing digital activities at TV5 Quebec Canada.  His team is responsible for all television related interactive content and applications, Web and mobile platforms programming and original productions for learning and social media. He also created the TV5 Fund which made possible the financing and production of 55 original series.  Between 2010 and 2013, Benoit headed the Internet and Mobile Commission at CTF, an international association of public French broadcasters.


Anne Santa Maria

Milena Seyberth

Since 2008 Milena Seyberth is working as a commission editor for the ZDF`s "Das kleine Fernsehspiel", and ZDF Online. In 2017 she started working for FUNK, the content network of ARD and ZDF, developing fiction web series. She was part of the development team for Germany’s biggest ARG “Rescue Dina Foxx!”, a multiplatform interactive project.

Milena Bonse was born 1981 in Bielefeld/Germany. After longer stays abroad in Philadelphia/USA and Madrid/Spain, she enrolled at the Munich Universtity for Television and Film in 2001 to study in the Film and Television Documentary department. Beside her first documentaries she also shoots journalistic tv-features at home and abroad. 

From 2005 to 2006 she spent 2 semesters at the Universidad del Cine in Buenos Aires/Argentina. In 2006 she worked in script developing and production at Goldkind Film / TV 60, Munich. 2009 she graduates from Munich University for Television and Film with her feature-length documentary "Avenida Argentina".
